Gizmo and Ellen Mysteries - The Case of the Missing Boy by Eleonore Caron, is a children’s book for the slightly older set. Maybe 7 to 11, before you really get into those double digits. I say that because while it has a picture or two and a cover aimed at the younger set, the story gets a little “heavy” at times.
Little 10 years old Ellen and her Shih Tzu bichon Gizmo are known as their neighborhoods little investigators. They love helping the people of their community in any way they can. Ellen loved playing detective and Gizmo always had his nose to the ground to sniff out help. The little girl and pup team discovered their talent for the hunt when Ellen lost a key. Since then, the two have found everything from wallets and stuffed rabbits to even cats and other dogs. One day, the duo decides to take on a bigger mystery. Could they help find a missing boy by the name of Jimmy?
Now this is where I think the story gets a bit heavy. While playing ball with a group of friends, Jimmy has a very bad accident and is now lost. Jimmy also happens to be asthmatic. The police and those in the neighborhood are all searching for him. Jimmy’s situation is quite frightening and even for me, the description made my heart race a bit. Would Ellen and Gizmo be able to save him?
I think this story has a great message and it is a very nice read. It’s lovely that Ellen and Gizmo wanted to help the people in their community. This is telling children that they can be heroes and everybody loves a feeling like that. You are never too big or too small to help others around you. It is a beautiful thing for children and even some adults to understand.
I am giving Gizmo and Ellen Mysteries - The Case of the Missing Boy by Eleonore Caron, 2 out of 4 stars. Eleonore Caron is a first time author with a good idea that can definitely grow into a great series with some work. This book is for young kids but there are some grammatical errors that could get them stuck while reading. The books cover is very much a children’s book cover, so much so that the kids on the 7 to 11 scale may shy away from it.
