What do you do when the past comes knocking at your doorstep? You probably would be transfixed or experience temporary shock. This scenario would describe Emily's demeanor when she discovered a dead body by the beach.

Emily left the corporate and celebrity lifestyle she enjoyed in Boston for a fresh start at a quiet seaside village. This move came after a case she handled as a prosecutor turned on its head. Emily lost her job, broke up a 7-year relationship with Eric, and moved away from the scandal that crippled her life and career in Boston. To distract herself from wallowing in the pit of her failures, she regularly took walks at the beach close to her new apartment. One day, she discovered a dead body that seemed to have drowned. There was something about the dead man that brought back memories. However, she called 911, and Sheriff McNeil began the investigation. How would the investigation affect Emily's newfound life? Would there be something about the dead man that Emily knew?

Retribution by T. K. Walls is a short crime thriller that gets the reader hooked from start to finish. At 105 pages, the reader enjoys a fast-paced story of murder, betrayal, deceit, and vengeance. The author wastes no time serving it hot as he introduces the action from the first page of this book. There is never a dull moment as the story has a captivating and intriguing plot.

As earlier stated, this was a short read — I finished the book under two hours. When I took this book, I was on edge as to what story the author intended to tell within 105 pages. I assumed that the book would not be well developed, or the story would be rushed. I was amazed to see that the author narrated a well-developed story quickly and straightforwardly. Everything that makes a good story was aptly captured — background details, suspense, intrigue, twists and turns, and moments of serendipity. I saw this book as a paradigm shift in the way fiction is supposed to be today. The ever-changing reading culture fostered my assertion — most readers now prefer short and straightforward books.

What I liked most in this book were the elements of surprise and serendipity that graced it. I was impressed with the author's ability to integrate twists and turns without losing me. I initially thought this was going to be the regular storyline I've seen in most crime thrillers. The author's element of surprise swept me off my feet. I wouldn't go any further than this for fear of giving away any spoiler. I'm confident that this book would be worth your while if you love murder mysteries. There were trickles of profanity in the narrative. However, it shouldn't deter young adults and teenagers from enjoying this excellent book.

This was a well-written story that enjoyed professional editing. I didn't find any reason to take this book to the gallows. Therefore, I rate it four out of four stars.

This seems like a good crime novel. A short book is good but it’s a shame that it doesn’t last longer.

Writing a crime thriller short and yet full of twist within a plot that's well developed is difficult, but in this case the author did it. Thank you for your great review!

Wow! What an inspired review! :D I, too, was dubious about whether a story can be well developed and told in only 105 pages but, by the sounds of it, it can! :) Considering the praise as high as 'paradigm-shifting', I would not want to miss this! Onto my shelf this goes! :)

Thank you! Awesome review! :D
