Official Review: Poseidon's Eye by Trisha O'Keefe
Are you looking for your next thrilling crime book? Poseidon’s Eye by Trisha O’Keefe offers a unique twist. This story is told by the suspected murderer, Alex Carreras, and by the detective that is determined to close the case. Alex claims that his being set up for the murder of Shelby Turner and will stop at nothing to prove his innocence. Is he being framed? If so, by who and why? Or did he commit the murder?
I rate this book a 3 out of 4 for the following reasons. First, this book deserves a solid point for the plot. Poseidon’s Eye is a longer book. From start to finish there are 432 pages. With that said, the plot kept me interested the entire time. I found myself attempting to increase my reading speed just so I could figure out what happened next. The author definitely did a great job of creating mystery, action, and suspense without overdoing it.
Second, the setup of this story gains Poseidon’s Eye another point. I appreciated that it was told through two perspectives. Alex’s, the wanted murderer on the run, and Murray’s, the undercover cop attempting to solve the murder mystery. I think this setup kept the story from becoming stale and easily kept me entertained.
Third, this book was very character-driven, which I really enjoyed. The two main ones, Alex and Murray, are both well developed. They have great backstories and even better personalities. I found both to be very charismatic, which created an easy read. As for the other characters (there were at least 10 to 15 more), each one had a purpose and fit into the story perfectly. The only drawback to having so many characters was that I occasionally became confused as to who was who or who they were related to. I almost felt like I needed to make a flowchart to see how they all fit.
Unfortunately, I was unable to give this a book a perfect rating because of poor editing. The list of grammatical errors and misspellings is quite long. There were even multiple pages that contained some sort of editor’s note. At certain points, it felt like I was reading a rough draft instead of a published piece. If this book were to be professionally edited, I think I would give it a 4 out of 4 for the reasons stated above.
I would recommend this book to action and crime lovers because of the suspenseful and fast-paced plot. I wouldn't recommend this book to a younger audience because of the use of foul language and drugs. Additionally, there are a few racial slurs mentioned against Hispanics that might be offensive to some readers.
