Every once a while, you read a book, and it just hooks you in right away and makes you unable to put it down, and you keep reading it into the late hours at night, and you end up late for work the next morning. The Dark Web Murders is one of those rare gems. This fast-paced murder mystery thriller by author Brian O'Hare is about Detective Jim Sheehan and his team's relentless pursuit of a serial killer who loves to wax poetically about his murders in the dark web.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. First of all, the characters - from the charismatic Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan, his smart and pretty partner, Seargent Denise Stewart to the old school, no-nonsense Detective Edwin McCullough to the talented newbie Malachy McBride - every single one of Sheehan's team members feel wonderfully fleshed out and is easily relatable to the reader. I was pleasantly surprised by the humor in the conversations between the various team members. I specifically enjoyed the back and forth between Sheehan and the pathologist Dr. Richard Cambell.

The suspects - from the high society club members like Judge Kenneth Adams to the ex-convicts such as McStravick - all of them have well-written backstories which make them feel like real people with complex motivations. It was difficult to guess the identity of the killer, and it was this very reason that my eyes were glued to the pages until the very end.

One of the other things I wanted to point out is that the author's use of classical literature style prose was spot-on. The prose was smooth as butter on a knife and combined with the philosophizing, made the book so engrossing to read. The author delves into the psychology of the killer brilliantly, and the prose complements the content of the writing beautifully. The philosophical aspects of the killer's psych were very interesting to read.

I highly recommend this book. Anyone who likes reading a well-paced plot with realistic fleshed out characters should love the book. I will give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The editing is professionally done and the book seems flawless.

Be warned though, there is a decent amount of profanity used in the book. And although there are no sex scenes, events involving sexual violence are mentioned throughout the book. Readers who are uncomfortable with stuff like that are cautioned to stay away.
