It is a sad reality that, even in developed countries, people still create conflicts based on their skin colour. There are even recent incidents where people were treated mercilessly because of their skin colour. There are some people, who belong to mixed background. Have we ever thought about them? Have we ever thought about the identity crisis they face in society?

Mixed blessings by J.M Muse, is a story that tells the problems faced by mixed-race people, through the life of Kimberly and Star, the main characters in the story. The story also has characters who fight for the justice of these minority people. There are characters coming in between, ready to use violence as a weapon, in the shadow of religion. This story depicts the racism happening in America and, how that affects the lives of some people. This story continues with the bitter truths faced by the people in a mixed-race and the struggles of these people.

My favourite character in the story is Kimberly. She is depicted as a character with a strong mind, determination and self-respect. She is half Jewish and half Mexican. This situation makes her life difficult, making her neither a complete Jew nor a Mexican. She is being treated ill everywhere, even by her friends, because of this mixed-race background. People teased her and tagged her nicknames. It made me sad that, even children are not spared from the cruelty of this racist world. She is just in her mid-teenage where, she should be enjoying her life with her friends, exploring the world. She just wanted to be loved and led to happiness. But all of her dreams are shattered by the racist thoughts of some people.

This book stimulated my emotions like anger, sadness and concern while reading the book. The author was able to convey the trauma and pain, the characters felt when treated without justice. The also beautifully explained about many cultures. The Japanese culture was beautifully written in the book.

My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars, because of the beautifully presented theme of the book. The book deals with the facts that everyone should know. The theme holds serious events that are, unfortunately, still happening in society and should be rectified as soon as possible. The language used in the story is simple and easy to understand. The presence of many characters sometimes made a little bit of confusion. But, the book really succeeded in showing, how the voice of the minorities are neglected. The book had only a few grammatical errors in it and was professionally edited. I would recommend this book for the people who would love to read about politics, race and religion. But, I would not recommend this for children under eighteen because of the sexual scenes explained and profane language used. This book also details about drug usage also.

Mixed Blessings seems to deal with the still-present and devastating problem of racism on a personal level through its protagonists. Thank you for your great review!

I agree with your comment that everyone wants to be loved - no matter what is the color of their skin. Kimberly is searching for love and acceptance. I liked the way you described her and the emotions the author was able to evoke while telling her story. Great review! Thanks for the recommendation.
