Review by Mikaela Meyer -- The Dark Web Murders
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is a crime novel that deals with a series of gruesome and mysteriously connected murders. In The Dark Web Murders, the reader follows detective Sheehan and his group of detectives as they tirelessly search for answers in order to find the murder who, through the Dark Web, blogs about philosophical principles while describing the methods in which he killed his targets. On the surface, it seems that the murders are tied to a club of sexually depraved people who do not see money as an object; the mystery lies in why the killer chose these targets, and who the killer intends to kill next.
Elements that I disliked were mainly due to the uncomfortable topics that were discussed in The Dark Web Murders because they deal with various elements of sexual depravity; however, I think that O’Hare did a excellent job in avoiding the glorification of such immorality while simultaneously discussing it without trying to sugar-coat it or making it out to be something that is of light-hearted conversation. Elements that I liked were the close attention to detail that O’Hare placed in the development of his characters and the variety in vocabulary that he utilized. I also enjoyed the flow of The Dark Web Murders’s storyline and the way in which O’Hare tied up the loose ends as the story drew to a close.
I give The Dark Web Murders a four out of four stars rating, because I thought the plot was written so that it was easy to follow, and because O’Hare has a way of snatching the reader’s attention and beckoning the reader to continue reading on. I would not give it a three out of four stars rating because it was written very professionally—with intriguing characters, solid dialogue, a plot that had a number of twists and turns, and a clear writing style that made it pleasing to read. I do not think that anything less than a four out of four stars rating would do O’Hare and The Dark Web Murders the justice that they deserve.
I would recommend The Dark Web Murders to mature readers who are lovers of crime and mystery novels because O’Hare keeps the reader guessing and writes so that one cannot help but join the detectives in trying to narrow down who the killer might be. I do not recommend The Dark Web Murders to any reader that might find the use of vulgar language or the description of gruesome murders as offensive, nor would I recommend it to readers who are not mature, such as children or young teenagers, because the issues that are discussed in the novel are, at times, graphic and deal with topics of sexual depravity.
The editing was professional, and exceptionally well-done, with little to no errors in spelling, typos, and grammar.
