A party, a phone call, and a murder. The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare follows the investigation into the death of a judge, a man, who only hours before, was hosting a party in his house. With a hoard of suspects, a rumour of blackmail, and a strange Dark Web blog, it is up to Jim Sheehan and his team to find the killer before he enacts his plan to completion.

The Dark Web Murders is the 4th book in The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries series, and although I haven’t read any of the previous instalments, I certainly will now due to how much I enjoyed The Dark Web Murders.

I found myself drawn into the story from the first scene. There were enough questions raised that I was pushed to read on to find the answers. I wanted to know how the young man going to prison was related to the mystery we were promised. I wanted to get to the heart of why the Dark Web was so integral, and I wanted to guess who the murderer was and to find out if I was right (I wasn’t). The Dark Web Murders was a book I found hard to put down. Every time I thought I had something figured out, something else was thrown into the mix, and by the end, when everything was said and done, I was compelled to go back to look for the clues that I missed.

One of the things I loved most about this book is how it was reminiscent of some of my favourite British crime television dramas, such as New Tricks and Life on Mars. The relationships between the members of Sheehan’s team, and their relationships to people outside of the police force, had me rooting for them. None of the characters were redundant, and they all brought something to the story, despite there being so many of them.

If I had to identify one area which I didn’t enjoy as much as the rest, I would have to say that some of the dialogue was repetitive when things were being explained. I also found that, at some points, the way characters said things didn’t read like something somebody would actually say. However, this didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story, it just took a little getting used to in the initial chapters. Once I’d gotten into the book, I found it wasn’t too much of a bother, and the instances of the dialogue being a benefit to the story greatly outweighed the negative aspects of it.

I am giving The Dark Web Murders four out of four stars. The editing was amazing. There were very few mistakes, and the ones which I did find had no impact on my enjoyment of the book. I think The Dark Web Murders would appeal to people who like their books to keep them guessing, and don’t mind the grizzly details that come along with the in-depth explanations of murders.
