Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse is a novel that takes place in a world where identity and achievements are determined by the person’s skin color. The author shows to readers why racism isn't a good choice for humanity and why people should be treated equally regardless of their skin color, race, or geographical location.

Kimberly Solberg, a bi-racial Valley girl, is trying to understand who she really is. She is born to a Mexican father and a Jewish mother. Upon returning from her trip to Mexico to see her father, her boyfriend breaks up with her, describing her as a “Jew who went to follow her roots”. Thus, she starts to explore herself, and is met with both love and cruelty. Later, she meets Ahmed, a man of color who had pledged allegiance to the House of Jeremy.

Meanwhile, Minister Kublai Khan is on a mission to unify the colored race against white oppression. Together with Reverend Hung Sung Suk, they plan the marriage of two thousand white women with black men from the House of Jeremiah to give rise to a new race. They are opposed by people such as Pastor Tucker Dalton, a firm believer that whites are meant to be dominant.

To be honest, it took me a while to really get into the book. At first, it seemed as if there were no connections between Kimberly and Kublai Khan, so it was confusing to see the story switch from one character to the other. However, as the story progressed, I became more captivated by the book. I particularly enjoyed how all the characters intertwine with each other, and how the author neatly connected all the stories at the end. I also love how Muse addresses the topic of racism so directly, whereas other authors would often shy away from the topic. Kimberly’s story served as a relatable connection between the book and the readers, as most biracial people experience the same problems. The book shows what could've happened in our world, and reveals to the readers the issue we have with racism in our society today and why we need to resolve it.

I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The book was professionally edited as I only noticed a few errors. Some parts of the book did seem to be a little rushed but overall the pace was great. The language is simple and easy to understand. I would recommend this story to anyone interested into drama, action, and/or adventure. This book should only be for adults 18 and up as there are violent and sexual acts in some scenes. Overall, Mixed Blessings is an exceptional read that is both enlightening and suspenseful.
