Review by Nimisha_91 -- The Dark Web Murders
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O' Hare is the fourth book in his Inspector Sheehan series. Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan of the Northern Ireland Police Department is asked to investigate the brutal murder of Judge Trevor Neeson, a ruthless man well-known for passing maximum sentences in court. His judicial assistant, Edgar Doran, seems to think there was a blackmailer involved. Officer Sheehan is on the hunt for the killer when another man, a professor with no apparent connection to the judge is murdered with the same MO.
The search gets more frantic when more murders follow, this time of men who were suspects in the Judge's murder. While investigating, Sheehan's partner Denise Stewart comes upon a blog on the Dark Web, seemingly written by the serial killer himself. Calling himself ' Nemein', the killer has written about his murders in excruciating detail, with his own philosophical justifications for the murders accompanying the blog. As Inspector Sheehan and his team desperately look for answers, disturbing information is uncovered about the Judge and an exclusive, elite society he has formed. Is this related to the murders? Or is it a mere coincidence? Read the book to find out.
This is a fantastic mystery novel, filled with suspense. Extremely fast-paced, with something happening on every other page, it keeps you hooked. I finished the book in 2 days! There is so much depth to the characters and their relationships, that you remember all of them, despite the massive number of them. Although this is part four of a series, it can be read as a standalone novel. The author is extremely talented at describing scenes and characters, it's like you can see them with your own eyes. His writing is perfect. The reader is also provided with a glossary of characters included in the story at the beginning of the book, each accompanied by a short description, which was very thoughtful of him. I have to say though, the plot kept me so hooked, I didn't even need to use it once.
The only thing that bothered me a little was the abnormally simple puzzle the murderer gives the investigators at the end of the book. While I figured it out in a second, it took the characters very long to decode it. I found that a little inconsistent with how smart the detectives were throughout the remainder of the book. There is a fair bit of graphic sexual and violent content in the book, making it extremely inappropriate for children. Vulgar language is also present.
The violence and sexual abuse could be a trigger for some people, so please do read the description carefully before reading this book. This book will be enjoyed by adult readers who like murder/ serial killer mysteries. I loved this book, and will definitely be reading the other books in this series. I give it 4 out of 4 stars .
