Review by Lina-Hammami -- Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)
[Following is a volunteer review of "Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)" by Barry Litherland.]
It signifies several things when childhood playmates take their relationship along with them to the present. It demands love, loyalty, honesty, and several sacrifices accompanied by the delightful reminiscences, to hold a to-die-for childhood friend. Or doesn't it?
When the nine years old best friends, Philip, Wayne, and Tina, endured the tragedy of the fourth group's member's loss, Stevie, it's their friendship's chain that remains with them for twenty years. Like a breaking wave, Stevie's death is what shaped the three best friends' fates forever.
In his book, Waves break (on Unknown Shores), Barry Litherland played on the past and present's strings to create an astutely weaved novel that didn't miss a single component to be acknowledged as a masterpiece. The story which stirred smoothly between Philip Taylor's recollections and getting immersed in a series of events after Tina's father, Mr. Thomas Oldfield, was robbed and severely injured. Philip is shredded between his ambition to protect his best friend, Wayne, who was accused of the burglary, and his cowardness and sense of humor.
Although it was crime fiction, Litherland succeeded in lightening the story with Philip's humorous narration, which got him in trouble often. The excessive usage of metaphors adorned the book and provided the environment with a charmingly described figure.
The characters developed placidly as the plot unfolded. Along with the chapters of the novel, it becomes more straightforward for the reader to understand the full image and why the characters behaved in a particular style. I appreciated that the writer didn't overcrowd the novel with many ineffective characters. Instead, he appended just enough to satisfy the plot and concentrated conveniently on developing every character and enrich its interaction with its environment.
However, the author messed it with profanity. Cursing and swearing emerged in nearly every chapter of the book. While it can be reasonable for Wayne, considering his sick background, it still was extreme for me.
Nevertheless, the book is professionally edited and facilely written. I cherished my experience reading this unique story Barry Litherland provided. It was inspiring and unusual, and therefore, I delightfully rate it a 4 out of 4.
I recommend this book for any crime fiction enthusiast. It is light and fast-paced for any reader to relish. Moreover, the presence of romance and comedy added a lot to it. Nonetheless, due to the profanity and minor violent scenes, I don't urge any minor-aged or sensitive-hearted to read it.
