Review by Melissa Breen -- Demon Freaks
[Following is a volunteer review of "Demon Freaks" by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison.]
The book begins on a dark stormy night. Lightning flashes through the sky as twins Bing and Ron Slaughter run through the forest wondering what sort of creatures they were running from and how their night of playing punk music and studying for the SATs the following day, had turned into them fleeing for their lives. Along with their friends Meat and Kaitlyn, as well as their despised history teacher Mr. Brom, Bing and Ron start to uncover a secret underworld of magic, sacrifice, and golf. After finding out that they might be expelled because, while performing a gig at the school, they played a song that didn’t show Mr. Brom in the best light, and now that they’re on thin ice in school, finding out about the existence of demons is the last thing the twins need.
What I liked best about Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison was the humour and lighthearted moments. From instances of strengthening friendships and teamwork, a sense of heart was brought to the book which gave comfort amidst the chaos of the chase. The storyline was a bit bizarre but it was easy to follow, and there’s a couple of plot twists to keep the readers on their toes. There was nothing I didn’t like about this book. I thoroughly enjoyed my reading of it and as someone who normally prefers character-led novels, I was pleasantly surprised that a plot-led book hooked me in so easily.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I could not find a fault with this book. It was perfectly edited, it was exciting, and it was impossible to put down. I was hooked and I sped through it enjoying every minute of it, so therefore I felt it deserved more than just 3 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to young adults and teenagers who enjoy reading stories of adventure, magic, and demons. There are a few instances of injury in the book so I would not recommend it to anyone who would be sensitive to physical harm. It is the perfect book to curl up to on the nights when you need something light and fun to forget the demons in your own life and settle down into fiction.
The book opens up straight into the action so as you begin to open up the pages of this story, hold onto your reading glasses and sit back for the adventure of the year as four teenagers take on the most dangerous and evil organization existing in their town: The Golf Association.
