Review by ccoppola1474 -- An Imperfect Crime
An Imperfect Crime. written by Fred Baker, is a crime novel. It starts off with Peter Simpson, Allister Brown and Allister's girlfriend, Sarah Parker talking about Simpson and Brown not being able to get their books published. They discuss setting up the perfect murder in which their would be no actual victim. The evidence would all point toward one of them while "claiming" innocence, then in the middle of the trial, the other would appear and show that there was no victim. This would grant them instant fame and their books would be published. So they agreed to fake a murder.
The novel then flashes forward to almost a year later with Simpson having been convicted and being executed for the murder of Allister Brown. Simpson had told his story many times to Father Guillermo Montero while Simpson was in prison and Father Montero believed Simpson. Simpson made a dying plea to Father Montero to promise to search for Allister and Sarah to find out what happened to them. They were supposed to come out of hiding during Simpson's trial and didn't. Father Montero agreed. Where have Brown and Parker been all this time and why do many people think that Simpson was a serial killer? Father Montero enlists the aid of Detective Lori Sanchez, who originally investigated the crime and thought it looked too perfect, to delve deeper into the case and find out the answers to those questions.
What I liked most about the novel was the characters. Father Guillermo Montero is a no-nonsense priest who doesn't take no for an answer or get discouraged if things don't work out the way he planned. He just finds another way. He has a past before he was a priest, so he has connections you would never think a priest would have and people are able to confide in him of course, but also talk to him as if he were a normal person. He will go to any length to solve the mystery of what happened to Brown and Parker, which just gets more interesting as you get deeper into the novel. People aren't who they seem the deeper you get.
Lori Sanchez is just a kick-butt cop. She stops at nothing to get the job done, whether its her own case, or the Simpson case. As the story evolves, she has to do a lot of political maneuvering, but she handles it well. She handles a gun even better and anyone that gets in her way better watch out, as she doesn't take crap from anyone. She is married to her job and very good at it. She gets pertinent information from key people in the case and works closely and openly with Father Montero, never holding anything back. She treats him like a partner.
I did not least like anything about this novel. It was written well and was professionally edited. It was a real page-turner. The novel was absolutely amazing. There was nothing I felt I needed more of, or was lacking in the novel. I stayed up late into the night reading because I couldn't put it down.
I gave this novel 4 out of 4 stars because, like I said it was absolutely amazing and it was professionally edited. This novel would be enjoyed by people who like crime novels, mystery novels and action and adventure. I would not recommend this novel for sci-fi or romance readers.
