Review by mayspringday -- The Dark Web Murders
Brian O’Hare takes readers on a high-intensity journey in his novel The Dark Web Murders. This is an exceptionally written mystery novel that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
The novel follows an Irish police task force, led by Jim Sheehan. The task force is rocked when a well-known judge is murdered in his home. The judge is murdered in a very brutal fashion and it leaves the team grappling to find the killer before they strike again. As the team investigates they discover an underground club that participates in illegal and heinous activities. After further digging, they discover that the judge played a crucial role in this secretive club. While the team is struggling to uncover the murderer, the killer is posting the details of his killings to the Dark Web. Will the team be able to discover and stop the killer, or will they be able to escape into the dark?
This book is exceptionally written. I adored the writing style and the vocabulary was impeccable. O’Hare was very good at creating imagery which allowed me to easily put myself into the story. His writing style was extremely advanced and kept me engaged.
The Dark Web Murders is the fourth book in a series, but I didn't have any trouble following the plot. It can be read as a stand-alone novel. I enjoyed this book so much that I am probably going to be purchasing the first three books.
O’Hare put in a glossary and a list of characters at the beginning of the novel. I found this extremely helpful because there are a lot of characters and having the ability to go back and remind yourself of who the character makes the story much easier to follow. The glossary is also very advantageous because I wasn't aware of the Irish police system. The glossary allowed me to still understand everything without having to constantly look up what different things meant.
The mystery aspect of the novel was very well done. It kept me guessing until the very end. It wasn't predictable at all. The crime aspect of the book was also amazing. O’Hare put lots of details in describing the crime scenes. He left little clues scattered throughout that I was able to pick up on and piece together after I figured out who the killer was. Overall, I would say that this is one of the best mystery novels that I’ve ever read.
The only suggestion I would make is changing up how he writes stuttering. One of the detectives has a stutter and O’Hare writes it as just repeating first letters. I would instead suggest writing it as repeating words to add some more variety to the stuttering and make it more realistic. I couldn't find any grammatical errors and the writing style was exceptional.
There is attempted rape in this story and very detailed descriptions of crime scenes and violence. If you are sensitive to these sort of things I would read this book carefully.
Overall, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was written extremely well and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I didn't want to put it down. I am going to purchase the other novels in this series because I enjoyed Brian O’Hares’ writing style so much. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and realistic crime novels.
