Review by MandiStew317 -- An Imperfect Crime
Fred G. Baker’s An Imperfect Crime: A Detective Sanchez/Father Montero Mystery is the first installment of a series and it immediately pulls you right into a thrilling world of murder, mystery and action. A priest who visits inmates on death row finds himself on a mission when a man he believes to be innocent is sentenced to death. With the help of a firecracker of a detective, they start an off-the-books investigation into a murder conviction that may be more complicated than it seems. This dynamic duo is taken on a journey that is as complex as a labyrinth as they follow lead after lead.
I gave this book a solid 4 out of 4 stars. While reading, I was constantly on the edge of my seat. Baker’s writing style is, without a doubt, first-class. He is able to keep you on your toes and craving more. Even though the book was full of elaborate plots, the reader could easily follow the story due to the writer’s superior job of intricately and skillfully laying out the details. I would highly recommend this novel to all those who enjoy a thrilling mystery packed with intrigue and action. There were a couple of paragraphs that depicted a vile rape, so I would not recommend this for young readers or those who are sensitive to sexual violence.
I enjoyed this book immensely and will certainly read other works by Fred G. Baker. This author has a way of drawing the reader in with an exceptional eye for detail. Throughout the novel, Baker expertly dropped tiny breadcrumbs of clues and suspicion that enabled the reader to use their own detective skills to form their own conclusions of who the suspect could be. The two main characters are well thought out and have a nice, realistic depth to them. The writer has done a very thorough job of bringing all the characters of his story to life, not just the main characters. This is a wonderful mystery with a unique storyline. I did not feel that any portion of this book was lacking in any way. It was fast-paced and action-packed.
The one and only thing I disliked was that the author used the characters’ last names. It made it difficult in the beginning to know who was who and I found myself going to the previous pages to remember which last name went with which first name. This is solely arbitrary, and does not take away from the enjoyment of the book at all.
Overall, I would recommend An Imperfect Crime by Fred G. Baker to anyone looking for a fast-paced read. This was a well-written, professionally edited novel that takes the reader on an exciting roller-coaster of a ride through a world of murder, gangs and foreign countries. I’m excited to read the next installment in the series.
