Review by Tummie26 -- Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)
Recently I have read an intensely, outstanding Book. The name of the Book is "Waves Break (On Unknown Shores)".It is written by famous Author Barry Litherland who lives and works in the far North of Scotland. He is known for several Crime Fiction, Paranormal Crime Fiction and and Middle Grade Children's Fiction novels. It is a Crime Fiction Book.It has 334 standard pages (250 words per page)and consists of 42 chapters.Published by Bleaknorth Publishing, 2019.
The Book is about childhood bosom buddies who lived in a conurbation inhabited with positive, exceptional opportunities and also brimming with crime, greed, violence and corruption. The story unfolds through Philip an investigative journalist and a friend of Wayne's.Philip is a deep thinker, shy, not a hero, most times in the shadows, calm and collected individual.Wayne is more of a rascal, likes to play the hero, wonderfully nuanced and complicated person.Wayne works in a factory job, food processing, but he started off part time then they took him on full time, quite an achievement during times of austerity when the best you can hope for is a sixteen-hour contract.Philip is raised by a good family who always guarded his future while the story is different for Wayne and nobody cares about him except Tina , his girlfriend and Phil his best friend.Phil wonders why he is a friend of Wayne yet they have nothing in common except a past and a bound of death. The consequences of the tragedy that took place in their childhood were catching up with them in their adulthood stage of life.
The book is not predictable and it is well developed which makes it enjoyable to read and to be curious of the events to unfold. This book is shocking and humorous at the same time. One of my favourite parts was when Philip was dragging Wayne to his Flat after he caused a huge scene at the bar,he began to do all that a drunkard man can do,some minutes after arriving at his the flat,Wayne will watch rugby match as if nothing ever happened, sober as ever with congealed blood on his nose and lips, swollen eye, bruising. This will live Philip wondering, deep thinking an smiling. The writing style of the author is engaging and most appealing to read. The writer captures your imagination as he brings characters to life that it is easy to imagine them.
Reading Waves Breaks (On Unknown Shores) gave me shocks, unbelievable moments and also pleasure and smiles of ongoing revelation as things unfolded in the Book. The book gives shocking details about Wayne 's family and all the events of bad things that happened to him when growing up.Wayne had to deal with his abusive brother Tyrone, his drunkard and addictive mother and the absence of his father. Therefore this Book made me question my character because normally I judge people without knowing what they pass through everyday and I have never imagined any child living under such conditions as Wayne's situation. This has made me to have different perspective about life. This book made me sad especially the terrible things Wayne had to face at 9 years of age.In addition the book made me feel that everyone deserves a chance to be a better person in life despite their background, just like Wayne. Wayne was not my favourite character up until I got curious and everything unfolded.Am glad to say he is now my favourite character in the book.I really enjoyed the Book because it has strong characters unfortunately some content was a little bit offensive to me as it contains profane words and statements .There is a scene where word bastard is mentioned ,"politicians are bastards" another scene describes someone being "f****g moron".This book contains profanity in almost every charpter.Despite some content being offensive to me the Book makes sense because it is skillfully and well edited and the ending satisfying.
I rate this book as a 4 out of 4 stars. The editing was outstanding and skillfully done and I didn't find any typos.I cannot think of anything that I disliked about the plot or the authors writing style, which is mostly not formal without lengthy exaggerated statements.I recommend this Book to anyone with a sense of humour.Don't read this book if you don't like to laugh because there are so many hilarious events, readers who are sensetive, maybe religious fanatics and young children because the Book contains a lot of violence and profanity.
