Review by vianeyr0422 -- An Imperfect Crime
The Perfect Crime written by Fred G Baker is a mystery story set in the state of Arizona. The name of the book basically describes the plot of the whole story. A group of three friends live ordinary lives as they try to make ends meet. Two of them happened to be writers and get the idea of setting up the perfect crime. They wanted to execute an impossible to solve crime to make big names for themselves in the writing industry. It ends up going awry and an innocent man is convicted of murder. Long story short, a priest that goes by Montero along with Detective Sanchez try and dig up what happened. As they follow the clues they eventually find the truth.
I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars with how well it was written. I wouldn’t say it’s perfect because it does have its questionable moments but the story itself seemed compelling. There was a balance in describing the setting and characters along with the dialogues. The fact that the author based this crime in Arizona is what piqued my interest to read it. I personally don’t see a lot of books written with Arizona as their setting and it felt like the author had personal experience in the state.
The author did a good job at giving their characters personality and reality. The transitions between detective Sanchez and Father Montero kept me compelled to keep on reading. The contrast between their jobs also helped to pique interest since one put bad people away and the other basically consoled those same bad people. Even the minor characters got a good amount of spotlight and the writing for them didn’t feel rushed or like they played a smaller part.
The only complaint I would have for the book is that there were a few grammatical errors that I found but they weren’t major. They didn’t impede my understanding of what was going on in the current page. Overall, it felt like it had been professionally overlooked.
As a mystery book I believe that it would appeal more to a mature audience like older adults. There are a few curse words that are exchanged between characters, although they’re minimal towards the beginning of the plot there are more exchanges of curse words later in the story. Additionally, there were also borderline graphic scenes implemented in the story which is why it would be more for adults.
