Unsuspecting Prey by Margie Myers

Post by Paliden »

I just finished reading Unsuspecting Prey. This book was a very interesting read to me. Have any of you ever read any of her books?

It starts off with a very spooky beginning. Jacob Caleb Monroe Sr. has died and immediately you get the feeling that he was a very evil man. Next, we meet Madison Monroe. Madison is Jacob Monroe's middle child and she hasn't set foot in Creston, North Carolina since the day she left more than two decades before. Now, she is returning for her father's burial. Returning to a home full of mysteries and siblings that seem to really hate her for reasons unknown. Caleb is her older brother, a crooked attorney that is one straw away from the looney bin. Elizabeth is the youngest, a "wild child" with no sense and an explosive temper. The only good thing about coming home is Langston and Hattie, the elderly black couple who practically raised the three. Shortly after the funeral, Madison learns that she is the main heir to her father's estate. This is when the fireworks really start! It now becomes obvious that someone is out to hurt Madison. Due to all the turmoil in her life, Madison tries to write off all the strange things happening to her. But she is finally convinced (and terrified) that someone is out to kill her. Of course, once you start looking for enemies, the list seems to just keep on growing. But right when you think, you finally have it figured out.............there is a serious twist to the story.

This was a suspenseful read that didn't take too long to finish but was very satisfactory in its ending. I would have liked to see the second half of the book drawn out more, especially the characters backgrounds but still enjoyed the book. The detail given to dialogue and grammar was excellent. You can definitely feel Ms. Myers psychological expertise in the defining of her characters. I especially enjoyed that the story itself was very clean with no sex and minimal cursing. And being a Southerner myself, I found many a smile over the little things that only a Southerner would know.
