Review by Njoxs-19 -- The Juicy Fruit Man by LaMar Going
The Juicy Fruit Man by LaMar Going is a page-turner thriller, full of suspense till the last page. Declan who is a soldier just returned home from fighting for his country in Vietnam. As it comes with war, he has gone home with his share of nightmares which he is fighting to control. Before he left Vietnam, we learn that he had smuggled marijuana, which he has entrusted his dear cousin Rachel for safekeeping as they sell it in small bits.
As it comes to drug dealing, they get into trouble when his former friend and soldier, Fisher, wants a share of the Thai sticks. Fisher has included two corrupt and greedy police officers in his plans, whereby they plan to steal the whole lot of marijuana that Declan has skillfully hidden. They follow Declan to the city of Chicago where they plan to take it all. Will Declan manage to keep his cousin and her children safe? Yes, he would do anything to ensure that his family is safe.
We learn that Declan is a kind man who would do almost anything to ensure the safety of his family. I loved how he kept Rachel safe and ordered her not to come out of her hiding place till he was sure she was safe. The book first highlights the past of Declan and also brings us to the present. The characters were well placed and each played their role very well. I loved how he minimized the number of characters and made sure that they all revolved around each other.
What I loved most about the book is the use of family bonds. LaMar Going brings out the importance of taking and protecting one's family, whereby we see this in Declan’s need to protect Rachel and her family. The book also explains into detail the afterlife of war veterans where we see that, while some may end up dead, others go home to continue fighting battles in the form of nightmares.
The book was professionally edited and I found no grammatical or spelling errors. Also, there was nothing that I found that I did not like. The language used is simple and slightly profane, and adding the brutal descriptions of killings and war as would be found in a book of such kind, I, therefore, recommend this book to adult readers and all other thriller lovers. I, therefore, rate this book four out of four stars.
