Review by i_mims -- All Good Things by Rosemary Reeve
What a remarkable way to start a novel. Reeve piques her readers curiosity from the very beginning and constantly keeping it interesting as you keep reading. Every chapter is precisely written with care and consideration. All Good Things lived up to my expectations of a good crime novel.
Harmony went missing; Mr. Piper was found dead in his luggage. Jack Hart, as a Seattle lawyer in a big firm—Piper Whatcom & Hardcastle—struggles to keep up with his career and finding clues that would lead him to find Harmony and her dad's killer. Just when they—together with Detective Antony and Oden— had thought that they'd get the right person; they would either killed themselves or be dead when they find them, pushing them to start all over again. But on a unfortunate occasion he had stumble upon Janet Daniels'—Harmony's secretary—cryptic voicemail causing him to almost lose his life twice and eventually learning of the firm's big, dark secret that is related to Harmony's disappearance and would greatly affect his future and career.
With Rosemary Reeve's background—Attorney and a Harvard Law School graduate—she makes the whole novel so easy to understand. She uses jargons on a minimal level. Almost everything is in lay man's term which makes it more attractive and so hard to let go.
I feel like Harmony is written specifically for Reeve's mother whom she sends a copy of every chapter at home for critique and review. Considering her mom's age, she wrote how lovely, brave, sweet and kind Harmony is in Jack's recollection and she appears after an intense chapter or scene. I can almost hear her say "Mom, here's Harmony. You can relax now."
Every character has properly served their purpose whether to anger, scared or fill the mystery. They were all greatly thought of; but to emphasize, Harmony's character is the soul in this story. Without her it would be lifeless. She is tough and courageous when it comes to her enemy but sweet and sensible to those she cares about. Though there weren't many actual interaction between her and Jack aside from his memories of her, it still made me love her to bits. She was like the breather that everyone needs every once in a while. After every intense chapter there will be a mention of Harmony through Jack's memories and it was like you can finally heave a sigh after all.
I also love Jack's character even more after learning about his past. Despite what he had been through he turned out to be such a lovable, caring, and honest person where he could easily be adored by kids. Although I've seen in movies a lot of times how a person with troubled past could turn into a psychopath and murder without remorse. Jack proves that there is always an exception for everything and that there is also good hidden within us. I rate this novel four out of four stars because I can proudly recommend it to my friends who are just beginning to explore this genre and are more sensitive or easily grossed out.
