“A stone has fallen in a pool and those ripples are spreading ever outwards, and no one knows where they’ll break. Unknown shores, I guess.”

Bonded together after witnessing Stevie’s death when they were only children, Phil and Wayne only have each other. Now adults, Phil's friendship with Wayne only seem to get Phil into even more trouble than when they were younger. Seen fleeing the crime scene at the Oldfield house, Wayne suspected of aggravated burglary and grievous bodily harm evades the police and goes into hiding. There is talk going around about a file that Wayne supposedly stole that night, some dangerous people are showing up at Phil's apartment looking for it. The tragedies of the past are quickly starting to catch up with them. Phil, a reporter turned detective in his struggle to unravel the mysteries surrounding the JAYDEE file and its whereabouts, even makes a few unlikely friends along the way. But time is running out and Phil needs to find the file since his very life depends on it.

Waves Break (Upon Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland written in the first-person narrative from Phil's perspective follows a fast-paced crime fiction that shifts between the past and present. The book explored mysteries in the past such as how Stevie died and in the present; the JAYDEE file and everything connected to it. Phil's character is relatable, because of his jealousy and insecurities, and in saying so is my favorite. He has a strong sense of wrong and right although he’s not as confident as Wayne, he makes up for it by being fiercely loyal. Phil is extremely funny and brings humor into a serious novel otherwise. He uses his humor as a defense mechanism, which in some instances comes across as death wish as he cracks a joke in a tense situation seeming very reckless with his own life. Aside from its incredibly well-developed characters, the book also touches themes such as loyalty, power and corruption, murder, and abuse. Litherland keeps you hooked with a mystery thriller and a racing fight against time for the truth.

Profanity is expected with you're dealing with criminals and a person's inner thoughts but the book has excessive profanity and although I wasn’t put off by the use of profanity I didn’t like how often it is used and in my opinion, there are about a 100 too many cursing words in the book.

I rate Waves Break (Upon Unknown Shores) 4 out of 4 stars, although the profanity was a problem as mentioned above, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and it was very well written and edited without a single mistake. Because of the excessive profanity and depictions of violence, I would not recommend this book to young readers, but if you're looking for an interesting mystery and a humorous time please take a look at this book.
