Review by Holly Bernier -- The Kahler Files #5 -- Maxwel...
The Kahler Files #5 -- Maxwell's Silver Hammer by Eric Safflind starts off with a bang! Barry Sandler is a man who loves nice cars, especially corvettes. When he sees a beautiful brunette next to him in a black Shelby GT-500 Mustang convertible he is mesmerized. What happens next is very unexpected, but it ends up making Barry a sort of hero to the beautiful brunette, Alexandra Blake.
Alexandra’s brother, Ethan Blake, would like to meet the hero Barry who helped his sister. Barry agrees to meet Ethan the next day at his lab. Ethan Blake makes crystals for communication for satellites. Ethan not only wanted to thank Barry for helping his sister, but he also wanted to question him as to why he was there where Alexandra was. Barry explains that he saw her at the stoplight, and things progressed from there. Barry thinks Ethan is a bit paranoid. Was someone trying to cause harm to Alexandra, Barry, Ethan, or all three?
There are a good number of characters in this story. The author has a way of writing that makes you feel you know who these characters are and what they’re thinking. The conversations and communication between the characters feel very real. I enjoyed the author’s descriptive writing style like, “The mustang glistened in the early afternoon sunlight as if elves had sculpted it from black crystal.”
There is quite a bit of profanity in this book, starting on page three and continuing throughout. There are also explicit sexual situations that may be offensive to some readers. This story is suspenseful and has a little bit of everything including, violence, murder, profanity, kidnapping, rape, sex, incest, literature, and terrorism. That being said, I don’t think anyone under the age of 16 should read this book.
Readers who enjoy stories that are full of action and suspense will like this book. Readers who are offended by profanity, violence, or sexual situations are not good candidates for this book.
What I liked most about this story is that it was suspenseful. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen in the many predicaments these characters find themselves in. I also liked the way the author writes with delightful descriptions. For instance, “Wispy gray clouds fluttered between us like flocks of geese.”
What I disliked most about this book was the amount of profanity. The storyline called for some needed profanity due to certain situations, but I think there could have been less of it. I believe the book was professionally edited, as I found only one typo and no grammatical errors. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so I am giving it 4 out of 4 stars.
