Review by stephanie1972 -- The Dark Web Murders
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare is the fourth novel in the Detective Sheehan collection. It is the last of the series because the author is taking time away from his writing career to spend time with family.
I look forward to reading the past novels as much as the books he writes in the future.
Had I read the previous novels, I may have felt more of a connection to Detective Sheehan and his team. However, O'hare invites us into the novel with a detailed list of the characters he has created, making it a little easier for the reader to navigate through all the personalities. It is such a delight to a mystery lover like me to use deductive reasoning to solve a grand mystery. Others may feel it is an overwhelming amount of information, and maybe that is why it was hard to really get close to the protagonist. Although the author is gifted in depicting the personality of the antagonist.
The characters are brought to life through their dialogue and seem true to their occupation. I would have enjoyed seeing them more out of uniform though. The author developed the plot much more than the characters. I suppose it was necessary for the mystery to evolve. It isn't the value of the characters that really interests me in this novel; it is the love of the mystery itself. It is an exercise of the brain to unravel the dark web mystery. It is quite a surprise when the murderer reveals their identity, but it is the piece that fits into the puzzle perfectly. I applaud the author for tying everything together so well.
It begins when Judge Neesom is found with a bludgeon to the head, and left unclothed. Detective Sheehan and his crime scene investigators arrive to interrogate, take notes, and gather clues to determine who had motive and opportunity. Sheehan and company learn the judge had an evening party with some elite and wealthy professionals, all of whom were not fond of the victim. As the team is narrowing down their suspects and questioning guests for the purpose of their evening meeting, another body is found with the same blow to the head and left unclothed. Now a serial killer is on the streets.
The responsible party begins a blog on the dark web, a sinister and criminal part of the world wide web. He shows no remorse and feels justice has been served. He explains in vivid detail how he lures his victims and takes pleasure and pride for the grotesque acts he commits. The detectives stumble upon the blogs and they must solve the mystery of the dark web murders before it hits too close to him!
I would give the novel a 4 out of 4 stars. It was a clever mystery and anyone who loves action, suspense, and mysteries will enjoy this book. I would not recommend to those who find nudity and profanity offensive.
