The Dark Web Murders is a thriller novel written by Brian O’Hare. It tells the story of a serial killer who kills people and writes it in his blog. Inspector Sheehan is assigned on that case. Will he be able to learn the identity of the serial killer?

The first case that kickstarted the story is the murder of a prominent judge. Inspector Sheehan and his comrades investigated the events that occurred the night prior to his death. While they were investigating, a blog appeared in the Dark Web. The person, who goes by the name Nemein, described in his blog how he killed the judge.

After that, another killing took place. Eventually, multiple killings took place. Nemein’s blog contains themes such as Justice, Vengeance, Justification and such. One day the team found out that the serial killer has been posting the details of his crimes in the dark web. Will this be enough to help them find the killer?

I enjoyed reading the novel. I appreciated the writing style of the author. Normally, I prefer mystery novels to be in a first person point of view but the way he describes the events made it quite easy to picture what he is trying to say. What I like the most is the written account of Nemein after killing a person. I actually liked reading that part because it gave me insight on what is happening in his mind. It also made me question things like the current justice system and how unfair it is for many, especially for the poor. It made me question the system itself. This helped me to understand his actions. Because of the blog, I got to see his point of view. One of my favorite lines from his blog is about hate. He mentioned that hate is not necessarily bad but hatred which causes the person to act without control has “reduced him or her to irrational savagery.”This statement made me think that unlike a lot of people whose motivation to kill is hatred, his motivation is his philosophical views. This made me question if a lot of serial killers in real life also think like this. Obviously, murder is never right. But getting to see the rationale behind the murders is interesting.

Aside from the dark web blogs, I also enjoyed the collaboration and teamwork of Sheehan and his team. In other mystery novels, the detective usually works alone. This is new for me, and I enjoyed it very much. I did not find any errors while reading which made me believe that this is professionally edited. At times, the story can be quite dragging. Nevertheless, I rate this novel a 4 out of 4. I do not recommend to young readers since it contains profanity and some gruesome scenes. Otherwise, I recommend this to people who like mystery novels especially those that are thought provoking.
