SELECT ALL The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare portrays Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan of the Northern Ireland police ensnared in a new case. Can the detective and the rest of the force untangle the iniquity and corruption interlaced within this web of inner deceit?

The protagonist Jim Sheehan is described as intuitive, charismatic, clever, and independent. But like all great heroes, he has an Achilles heel. There’s an English proverb that says “Old sins cast long shadows” as to wit, Sheehan will soon be able to testify. What starts out as an investigation of one murder turns into a homicidal gossamer of a series of murders. In among the melee of catching a killer, Sheehan confronts political intrigue and an insidious private club full of the bastions of society aptly named Fulfillment for the Enlightened. Good thing O’Hare provides us with a playbook of characters, a glossary of terms, as well as a view into the complex conglomeration known as the dark web.

Our murderer calls himself or herself Nemein. Nemein is the root of the word Nemesis, which comes from the name of a Greek goddess whose job it was to dole out divine retribution. The murderer is determined to live up to their name, but like most killers can’t keep mum about their exploits, and feels the need to share this information on the dark web in the form of a blog. This book reminds me of Nemesis by Agatha Christy and just like Christy, O’Hare spins a gauzy haze of clues and red herrings to keep us guessing until the end as to the identity of the killer.

I really appreciated the fact that the author explains to readers, such as myself, what the dark web is. The dark web, in addition to being the bane of police everywhere, is part of the World Wide Web that is only accessible by means of special software that allows users and website operators to remain anonymous or untraceable. The Dark Web Murders drags readers into what lies beneath the surface of this dark net. This book is for mature audiences only; as it features life styles for those who prefer prurient propensities. Like the dark web, readers are encouraged to browse there at their own risk.

I enjoyed reading this book and rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Reading The Dark Web Murders was like peeling an onion. Each chapter took me deeper and deeper down a shadowy path. And just like when peeling an onion, each layer led to tears. How deep will Detective Sheehan have to go to catch a killer?

The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is the fourth book in the Inspector Sheehan Mystery Series.
