The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is a mystery crime thriller following the protagonist Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan and his team of detectives as they race to capture a serial killer. This is the fourth book in the Inspector Sheehan Mysteries.

The book begins with an extremely helpful cast of characters, detailing their jobs as well as personalities and relationship to the Chief Inspector. Even though it is the fourth book, and I had not read the first three books, I experienced no difficulty following along with the story or in getting to know the characters.

Right off the bat, I was plunged into all the suspense and intrigue that comes in solving a mystery, as the story begins with a prominent judge being murdered in his house. Sheehan and his team slowly uncover a highly gruesome and global racket involving high-profile personalities, all the while racing against the clock to catch a serial killer. The pace of the book was perfect, and the plotline seemed solid to me, with no loopholes.

What made this book different from other crime thrillers I have read are two things – First, the author explains all the legalities and laws so succinctly, without making it seem like an information dump, that it felt enlightening to read it. Second, the entire modus operandi of the killer clearly took a lot of time and effort to formulate, and the very fact about his crimes being made public, by himself on the Dark Web, was frightening but equally page-turning. As is the case with all thrillers, the action went down in the last few chapters, and it was nail-biting. The author also provided a few dead-ends and twists, to offer a realistic view of detectives solving crimes. Along with all this, all the characters were extremely well-rounded, and the dialogues were snappy as well.

I did not find anything that I disliked about this book. In fact, I would probably read the entire series if I could.

I rate The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare 4 out of 4 stars as it was perfectly written with exceptional editing, a solid plot, and an intriguing mystery.

This book would appeal to all crime thriller aficionados and mystery lovers. There is minimal swearing used, but many sensitive topics are touched upon, such as – rape, torture, kidnap, graphic images of the actual killing, pedophilia, the Dark Web, and more. It is not suited for children or young teens.
