The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is the fourth book in the Sheehan series, but it is readable as a stand alone. In this installment, Chief Inspector Sheehan and his team are called to investigate the murder of a well-known judge. As they encounter more and more murders with the same modus operandi, their investigation leads them to the dark web and an illicit club that caters to the desires of the rich and powerful.

The book is well-written and obviously professionally edited. The writing pulled me in immediately and held my attention until the very last word. The author uses pacing effectively to lead the characters through a difficult investigation, and he leaves just enough clues for the reader to hazard a guess at who may be the perpetrator of the murders.

Although there are a lot of characters in this book, I found it easy to keep track of all of them. The characters have clear and distinctive voices, and the reader can tell who is speaking based on character voice. The main characters are well-developed and have clear back stories. Although characters occasionally refer to previous installments in the series, knowledge of former events is not necessary to follow the story. The hints about previous investigations did make me want to read more of the series, though.

At times while reading this book, I felt like I had it all figured out. I was putting the clues together in a different way than Chief Inspector Sheehan and his team, and I was sure I knew who the killer was. I wanted to grab the characters and yell at them for messing up the investigation. However, in the end, when the killer was revealed, I realized that I was completely wrong about the identity of the killer. As with any great mystery book, the clues could lead to multiple suspects, in order to keep the reader guessing.

I rate The Dark Web Murders 4 out of 4 stars. It is a well-written crime/mystery novel that wraps up neatly at the end. The book has strong characters and reveals just enough clues to keep the readers paying attention and interested in the outcome. I would definitely and strongly recommend this book to readers who enjoy crime and mystery novels. I would, however, give a trigger warning to the reader concerning the activities of the club in this book, many of which might disturb victims of abuse. The activities are not described in any detail, but the condition of the victims is.
