The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare is a challenging novel that follows detectives in Ireland trying to solve a series of chilling murders. When a judge is found dead it kicks off an investigation that eventually uncovers a sex cult full of rich and powerful deviants. As the seemingly unrelated bodies continue to pile up the detectives discover a blog on the dark web that details the murders. This blog provides unique insight on the killer, but doesn’t create a clear path to closing the case. Pay attention readers and see if you can unravel the mystery before the detectives do.

I especially like that this book is action packed from the very beginning and doesn’t let up. The first chapter does a great job of setting up the tone and pace of the book. I had fun trying to track the clues and piece together answers before the detectives did. I also really liked that this book can easily be read on its own without being familiar with the series.

There was only one thing I didn’t really like about this book and that was the text of the blog entries from the dark web. To the author's credit they are intended to be more formal in style and similar to classic literature. However, it so dense and different than the style of the novel that it is jarring. A casual reader will likely have to re-read these sections in order to ensure comprehension. Thankfully, they do at least enhance the plot and help move the story forward. I was also a little disappointed that I was able to solve the killer's final clue almost instantly.

I think this book will appeal to readers who are interested in murder mysteries and crime solving. For Americans this also provides an interesting glimpse into the criminal justice system in Ireland. However, readers should be aware that there is a fair amount of graphic violence and sexual content in this novel. I found it to be inline with some of the grittier crime shows on television and thus fairly acceptable, but those who are likely to be offended by such content may want to avoid this book.

Overall, I rate The Dark Web Murders 4 out of 4 stars. Although I was able to piece together some of the clues, there were still plenty of surprises to make it a great mystery read. I also found the characters engaging enough to entice me into reading the rest of the series. If you’re looking for an action packed crime story, this is sure to be a good read.
