Review by Wayne wayne -- Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)
“You forget so much of childhood. Sometimes, it feels like a waste of life. I mean, you live through all those years, nine or ten of them, and the only things you remember are catastrophically bad or exceptionally good. Other than that, it’s just impressions, shadows emerging from a mist then disappearing again — fragments. Other people remember more about those years than you do. Old people love to tell you about you,” Phil contemplates.
Phil, Wayne, Tina, and Stevie are childhood friends. Wayne's shifty behavior always leads him and his friends into trouble, and his brother, Tyrone, is a menace who finds fun in hurting people and animals. Tyrone is abusive to everyone including Wayne, whom he hurt several times; hence everyone fears him, including Phil, Stevie and Tina. None of them imagined that their childhood could haunt them even when they are adults. Maybe they thought that they would cease to fear Tyrone, or Wayne could change for the better; or did he? Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland, is a thrilling, adventurous book on how childhood worries could follow kids to adulthood.
What I like most about the book is the humor. Most of the descriptions left me in stitches. For example, the following statement is used to describe shock. “My stomach lurches, escapes my throat, bounces off several walls, and nose dives back through my open mouth.” Conversations among characters are funny and sarcastic, which I consider relevant since they are childhood friends. At no point did I find the book boring; nothing beats a humorous crime thriller.
The characterization is compelling, and all the characters focus on their strengths rather than ranting about their weaknesses, which I found entertaining and inspiring. I like how Phil narrates in the first person; he is a funny character, he is in the center of all the action and drama, and the situations he encounters are thrilling and adventurous. I could relate to his thoughts and silent in most scenarios. All the characters are realistic, they fit their roles, and easy to relate to and envision. There are instances of profanity, and considering it's a crime story, there is violence and murder.
The book is well-edited, and there was nothing that disliked about it. I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The plot is intriguing, and I love how the author creates suspense by alternating between the past and the present. I'd recommend this book to readers who are thrilled by humorous crime and action stories. Although you could miss some jokes if you don't enjoy sarcasm. I'd not recommend the book to young readers since some characters may have a negative influence on teens, and there are instances of violence and vulgar language.
