I rate the book The Date Farm by Jack Winnick, 4 out of 4 stars. The book is number four in a series of books following agents Laura and Uri Levin. I have not read any of the earlier novels in the series but the author provides enough details to cover the information you need.

The book starts out with us in a mall in Los Angeles, where a group of terrorists or jihadists have successfully killed multiple people, including themselves. Laura and Uri are called away from visiting Laura’s family to come to investigate the scene. They aren’t there long when they are soon called into New York for another situation. It seems this group plans to keep Laura and Uri busy. We are eventually introduced to the mastermind behind the plot, Sheikh Zainal Abidin. Abidin was previously held captive by Uri and Laura but managed to escape. Abidin and his country, Iran, are plotting revenge on America. They are planning to go after rare resources. Abidin and his group believe they have gotten away with everything. The Date Farm takes Laura and Uri across the globe after this group of terrorists to try to save the United States precious resources.

The element I Iike most about The Date Farm was that it had some relevance to what is now going on with society today. There are now men and women putting their lives on the line trying to defend their countries from those who would try to harm it. I like how the author put information at the beginning of the book and the end, saying that while the book is a work of fiction, there are elements like the video game that one of the Iranian characters played called “Invasion of Tel Aviv” that are real. It shows the author did a ton of research for his books, including looking up what is popular in a different country to get an exact point of view.

The elements I most dislike are certain points of the book that are very slow-paced, making the book drag. In the beginning, shortly after introducing Abidin, he takes a journey to see the President of Iran. Which is necessary to the story, I just dislike how slow it went. Certain sections with Laura and Uri were like this too, but it was mostly a section where Abidin and his group were traveling. I might have just been looking forward to more action and wanted the plot to move forward.

I gave the book 4 out of 4 stars because it was well written, fast-paced and I enjoyed it overall. The book kept my interest the entire time. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy action books, military, or spy novels.
