Review by meena1997 -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare, is a gripping murder mystery, which deals with a series of manslaughters that follow a certain pattern in the Northern Ireland. It all kick-starts with the gruesome murder of the Judge Trevor Neeson, after a party he hosted at his home. The investigation of this murder is headed by Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan, who is clever, charismatic and an officer whom his team looks up to. The team begins the investigation with little or no evidence on how the deed was done, but with a handful of basic suspects.
At the same time, there comes a blog on the darker side of the internet, usually known as the “Dark web”. It is known for its vast network of vile and corrupt activities, where the IP addresses cannot be tracked as they are anonymous and the sites are only available through specific deep web browsers. This blog is written by the murderer, who writes all the horrendous aspects of the murder like he is confessing his crimes to a priest. He provides philosophical explanations for each of his murders that give us an idea that he is a sharp and smart person. When one of the loyal sergeants, Denise Stewart, comes across the blog, it acts as a boon and a bane to the team.
With the high profile members, who attended the party at the judge’s house, being roasted for satisfactory answers for the questions posed by the detectives, we get to see an excellent murder inquiry unfold. When the contents of judge’s highly secure safe was unlocked, the team gets the evidence that these elite people were members of “The Club” along with the deceased judge. The zeal of the team to catch hold of the murderer as well as “The Club” members who traumatized the victims is laudable.
What I liked the most in the story was the bond that the team holds, be it seniors helping the juniors in the course of the case or Sheehan being a cool team leader, even though he knows the love birds within his team. The suspense of who the murderer is, keeps the reader hooked to the story. I did not come across anything to dislike in this book. The author has given many hints and pointers throughout the story that helps the reader to suspect as well as to cross out the characters who may have been the murderer.
This book is completely and thoroughly proofread and has kept the standard and quality for a murder mystery. The book is paced in a steady flow until the moment when the murderer is about to be revealed, where it picks up the pace. Overall, the book is a top-notch engaging and thrilling story which will keep the readers on tenterhooks. Even though this is book four in the inspector Sheehan mysteries, it can be definitely read as a standalone book. I would definitely not recommend this book to the light and tenderhearted readers, as the instances like rape attempt, drug addiction, physical and mental abuse, and pedophilia are slightly mentioned in the book.
I rate The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare, 4 out of 4 stars and would recommend the book to adult readers who are interested in serial murder thrillers.
