[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "L'Industria Inferni" by Lucas Patterson.]
L’Industira Inferni, by Lucas Patterson, is a fictional story which takes the reader inside a “heavily feared and notorious crime family in the heart of the darkest city in the nation,” and the reader learns some of the inside workings of the crime family. The main character, Jonny, tells about his life in the only “family” he has ever known, but when Jonny finds out that there is a difference between what he is taught and how things actually work within the family , Jonny has to take matters into his own hands and fight for his life.

This book was a fast and exciting read partly because of the narrative style and partly because of the fast-paced action. Told in the narrative style of an old time crime movie (picture an old-fashioned black and white film) the story is fast-paced and very descriptive, sometimes to the point of being exceptionally graphic in some parts. The narrative was written in some places in one word sentences. There weren’t long narratives describing the scene and action. The descriptions were short and to the point.

There were some places in the story where homophones of words were used instead of the actual words that should have been used, such as “all for not” instead of “all for naught”, and in a couple of places there were words missing, but the amount and type of errors were not enough to be distracting from the story. There were a few Italian words or phrases used in the book that a person who is not familiar with the Italian language might not understand, but this too didn’t take anything away from the story and possibly added to it by making it seem more authentic when the characters actually spoke Italian.

The descriptions in some places in the story were very graphic, maybe a little too graphic for some people, but I think anyone reading a book in this genre would be expecting to come across some of these types of descriptions. The graphic descriptions added to the intensity of the story.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I thought it was an exciting short read. I have only read about gangster families so I’m not personally familiar with them enough to know the accuracy of the inner workings of a “family”, but from what I have read, it seemed believable. This probably wasn’t one of the best stories I have ever read, but it held my interest enough so that when I had to take breaks from reading, I had a hard time waiting until I could get back to the book so I could find out what was going to happen next.
