SOUL SEEKER by Kaylin McFarren
Crighton is a demon under Lucifer. His job is to take evil human souls. It is also his job to bring angel souls to hell whenever Lucifer demands it. Crighton does his job effectively without compassion or remorse and allows no one to stop him.
Benjamin Poe has a son Gabriel, who likes to do evil things. Crighton comes for Gabriel’s soul, but Poe tries hard to prevent this from happening. Then Crighton tricks Poe into killing his son. Poe ends up on death row. Crighton then visits Poe on the night before his execution and causes Poe to take his own life and end up in the underworld among other lost souls.
When Lucifer sends Crighton to bring him an angel soul to eat, things take an unexpected turn. Crighton falls in love with this Angel, Ariel. As a result, Crighton escapes from hell along with his mother. While these three are on the run from Lucifer and the various demons after them, Crighton learns about certain secrets about himself kept from him by his mother. He finally meets his father, an angel unknown to him, who assists them and protects them from those after them.
When some demons finally kidnap Ariel, Crighton and his parents have to return to hell to face Lucifer and his army and rescue Ariel. Will they be able to defeat Lucifer? Is Ariel still Alive? You’ll find out in the book.
Soul Seeker reminds me of the movie series- Supernatural. They seem to have similar themes such as heaven and hell, angels and demons, fights between angels and demons, wars in heaven, and humans caught somewhere in between. In Soul Seeker, we also have angels and demons falling in love and being soulmates with such strong bonds that when one partner feels pain, the other feels it too, and when one partner dies, the other does. Love is nicely depicted and one of the things I enjoyed very much about the book.
I loved the writing style of the author and the way each chapter had a creative title, rather than just a number. I loved the unexpected plot twists. The skepticism with which humans took the information about having a demon (or just someone with supernatural powers) in their midst is something we can appreciate- human nature depicted clearly.
The demon was wicked in the first part of the book and shown to have hidden depths in the second half of the book, in particular when he fell in love-this is perhaps what I enjoyed most about the book. The way Kaylin McFarren redeemed this demon, revealed his internal battles, and humanized him so that one starts rooting for him, is a huge thing.
In short, I loved everything about the book and couldn’t find a single thing I disliked about it. The book was well-edited. I hardly saw any grammatical errors. The language used in the book was clean, with only very few obscenities, which I appreciate very much. Even the romantic scenes were described in a somewhat sweet, innocent manner, such that perhaps some young readers of a certain age may be able to read the book. However, I don’t recommend it to very young readers.
Anyone who enjoys paranormal fantasies will be sure to enjoy this book. Due to the themes and content of the book, individuals of certain religions may find it disturbing. However, if such a reader keeps in mind that the book is fictional and not in any way a depiction of reality-past, present, or future, there should be no problems. I give this book four out of four stars. I would love to read more of McFarren’s books.
