Long ago, I read a book. I do not remember the title of the book or the author. It is about the President of the USA. He has been almost killed and an imposter has taken his place. He wakes up in a hospital and recollects his past. The rest of the book is about how he goes to the White House, finds that everyone, including the First Lady is taken in by the imposter and how he sets about getting his rightful identity back and exposing the imposter.
Does anyone remember reading such a book? Could you let me know the title and/or the author of this book?

Unfortunately no, I do not remember the names of any of the characters either. I just remember the story line as I've written. Normally the authors I used to read in those days are Arthur Hailey, Irving Wallace, Frederick Forsyth, Sydney Sheldon Ken Follett, etc of this genre. And I think it was before the times of John Grisham etc. I looked at almost all of the books of the above writes, but I could not find one with this story line. Ofcourse, it could have been a one-off author whose book may the only one I'd bought.....

Could it be "Executive Action" by Richard Doyle?? Sounds like the book you describe.
===============================================
Executive Action by Richard Doyle::: Washington--five days before the presidential Inauguration The President Elect is charming, charismatic, and has a beautiful wife. He won the election by the arrowest of margins, but now he promises a new dawn for the American people. His name is Jack Meade.
Jackson, Florida. The man in the hospital bed has been cast ashore, his body and face ravaged by sa water, his survival a miracle according to the doctors. No one knows his identity and no one has posted him missing. He is irrational, delusional. He says his name is Jack Meade. No one believes him.
In Washington, the President Elect has the might of the Secret Service and the armed forces to protect him. No one is allowed to get too close to him. Al the patient has is the certain knowledge that he is Jack Meade, that he has been replaced by an exact double. The man who will shortly enter the White House represents a terrible danger to the free world. He must reach Washington and unmask him. But can he get to the imposter in time?
