[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Crow's Nest" by Michael T. Guidry.]
In The Crow's Nest, we are taken on a journey. A boy and his family go to live with his grandparents in an old mansion. It is the perfect place for an adventurous boy to explore. But there are secrets in this mansion, secrets that have been hidden for 3 generations.
What begins as an innocent exploration turns into a horror that the mind can hardly comprehend. You see, there is this crow. And the crow starts doing things that no natural crow can do. From there, it gets even stranger. And when the boy finally gets some answers to his many questions, he finds that it would have been better to never have known at all. Now it all falls on him. What to do with the knowledge he has? For no one could ever believe this story unless they lived it. And in the end, it will take a sacrifice of extreme courage to right the sins of the fathers.
Although a short read, this was a very interesting story. I don't usually delve into the realm of horror but on occasion have tried out a couple of different stories.
This to me was a very good horror story. It was very clean, but had enough of the supernatural to definitely fall into the category of horror. Not too gritty but just enough to keep you wondering. I couldn't figure out where this was going. The crow is enough to make me nervous of birds for the next few days. The ending was sad but totally necessary. I couldn't see it ending any other way. I loved the use of mythology in this story. Very rare in a horror book to go with the mythical side of it but it all tied together very nicely.
I would recommend re-editing the story as there were a few grammatical errors as well as some misspellings. Not too many, but enough to catch. That being said, I thought this was a very good short story. I would recommend putting this story into a book of short horror stories or lengthening into a short book. To me, this was way too short to be listed as a book. But all in all, I would recommend this to other readers that enjoy good, clean horror stories.
Thumbs up to the author! I give this story a 4 out of 4 star rating.
