The idea of the afterlife has always intrigued me. I remember my mom warning me I would go to hell if I did bad things. Obviously I did my best, because who would want to go to hell? Even though the concept of the afterlife was a bit scary, it never failed to get me thinking. Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a paranormal romance thriller novel.

To say Benjamin Poe was suffering was an understatement. The past wasn't kind to him, so was his present any better? No. His marriage was on the brink of divorce. To add to that, his son(Gabriel) was being nothing but a brat, causing them to fight whenever they tried to converse with each other. At some point, Poe was convinced that his son was bent on making life a living hell for him. And just when he was trying to solve the rifts dividing his family, a soul catcher(Crighton) from Hell appears in their lives. And his target was none other than Gabriel. As any father would, Poe tried his best to save his son even though he was wrong. But it was a demon he was dealing with; Poe ended up taking the life of his son, thus letting the demon get what he came for.

While Poe was suffering in the well of lost souls after he took his own life in jail, Crighton was assigned another mission. He was to capture a Guardian angel and her apprentice, a Celestial angel. And he would've succeeded if he had not fallen into the trap sprung by a group of ruthless scientists. It's not every day that a demon is captured by humans and forced to interact with the angel whom he was ordered to execute. And when that happens, there will be miracles, realizations, and hard decisions to make. Crighton knew Lucifer would torture him ruthlessly if he failed his mission. Especially, if he realizes that his best soul catcher was falling in love with an angel he was assigned to kill. But what happens when love proves to be stronger than anything else in the world? So powerful that a demon will abandon his evil ways even if that meant he would suffer endlessly at the hands of the Lucifer himself?

The book is divided into two parts; part one and part two. In part one, we get to know Poe's story and how he ended up in jail. This part is strictly a human's perspective. Part two reveals Crighton's world through his eyes. This is where things get intensely interesting. The style of writing was extremely attention grasping. My favorite character in the book is Crighton. Sure, he was evil and twisted, but his character entertained me the most. Just like how there's an exception in every case, he proved that a demon doesn't have to be heartless. The element of forbidden love made this novel more interesting and meaningful to read. There is nothing I dislike about the plot.

This book portrayed three important things. One, not all angels might be as selfless and pure as we think. Two, not all demons might be heartless and ruthless. And finally, humans can be crueler than the cruelest demon. Needless to say, the first two are just possibilities as it is beyond our capabilities to know if they are true. As for the third one, it's just a sad truth about humanity these days.

I rate Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren four out of four stars. The book seems to be professionally edited, as I couldn't find any errors. The plot includes profanity and a few sexual encounters. Those who like paranormal thrillers would love this book. Once you start reading, you won't be able to stop until the book ends. That's how addicting it is. I can guarantee you that there is no way you'll hate this book, even if you are not a fan of the paranormal genre. This novel is simply brilliant. I can't wait to read what happens in the following book.
