The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is book 4 in The Inspector Sheehan Series. It is a very dark crime thriller. It did fine as a standalone book as I haven’t read the 3 previous books in the series. I will definitely look into starting at the beginning of the inspector’s exploits.

This is a very intelligently written serial killer story. The antagonist fancies himself a philosopher and an instrument of justice. He details his murders in a blog on the dark web. The inspector and his crew base their investigation on the party that occurred at the first crime scene. There is a great deal of investigation into The Club. The Club is an exclusive place for the elite to live out their wildest sexual fantasies. The author provides just enough information to make the story work without overwhelming the reader with grisly details. As we follow several detectives and their investigations, it is all expertly drawn together by the author. The actual murderer was a complete surprise to me. Well done.

I truly enjoyed this book. To pick something I liked the most is quite difficult. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am captivated. It was a truly gripping thriller. I was all in by the time I got to the climax and I shed real tears on not one, but two occasions. It takes a good book to get that kind of emotional response.

There wasn’t a lot to dislike about this book. However, if I were to pick something that I disliked, it would be the incident with the strychnine. I feel as though it was unnecessary to the plot and it just made me sad. I did appreciate the avenging punch at the end of the story, but I’m not sure it completely made up for it. I also thought the blogs and the epilogue were a bit wordy. I feel the story could have the same effect if each of these was reduced by about ten percent.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found almost no grammatical errors in this lengthy novel. It was very well written. I was able to get a good sense of the characters even with the large number of them to contend with. I was engrossed the entire time reading. I would definitely recommend this book to any adult readers who enjoy crime thrillers. I would say underage should avoid it simply because of the intense nature of the crimes and their sexual undertones.
