The Juicy Fruit Man is a book written by LaMar Going. This book is about a farm boy who served multiple tours in the Vietnam war as a Ranger. Like a lot of disabled veterans he suffers from guilt, remorse and the loss of Innocence. Declan’s way of coping with his demons is to ride the rails going from one end of the United States to the other. He supports himself by selling Thailand marijuana. That he smuggled with help from others that served with him and his cousin back home from Asia. Declan’s past and present collide, when an old friend from the past comes calling. Who wants more than then to catch up with an old war buddy. He wants the marijuana called Thai Sticks, but he's not the only one looking to score. It all comes to a head at Declan cousin’s dairy farm in Kane County. I give this book 4 out 4 stars, and here's the reason why.

The Juicy Fruit Man hits all the criterias I have for a four star book. It's beautifully written and well edited. There are lines in this book that pull at your heartstrings. As well as make you think about your own life choices. The author takes you back in time to 1979 when our country was going through rebirth on every level. It makes you think about veterans and the people who they come home to then and now. This book makes you think about the loss of innocence, of a nation, of the people, and ourselves.

I am a ferocious reader. I have a list of books to be read that I'll probably never get all the way through. Additionally I have a handfuls of books that I will reread at least once or twice a year because I love them so much. This book made it to my reread list after the first two chapters.

I do have two suggestions before you start this book. Read up on the history of passenger trains in the late 1970s. It won't take about 10 minutes on the search engine you choose. This is so you are familiar with some of the lingo the author uses in this book. I'm from an area in the United States that depends on the car to get where we need to go. In other words our mass transit system here is limited. Another thing I suggest that you look up is Sen Sen Tin. I was five years old in 1979. So I had to look it up to find out what it was. That will take about a minute of your time, and well worth it.

I recommend this book to readers’ who are going into the military, who are in the military, veterans, the people who love them, and those who are interested in stories surrounding wars and other historical events. I have added this book to my re-read book list. Ferocious readers, you know what I mean: the books you come back to periodically like an old friend. The Juicy Fruit Man is a book you will not be able to put down. When you do finish this book you will think about it long after you turn the last page.
