Review by Larkspur -- Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren
The book Soul Seeker, by Kaylin McFarren, is based on the existence of heaven and hell. Crighton is a demon whose main job is collecting the souls of evildoers. Crighton tricks a father into shooting his murderous son at the beginning of the story. Later on, the demon guilts the man into slitting his wrists while in jail. The devil, Lucifer, calls on Crighton to capture an angel who was visiting earth. Lucifer feeds on the souls of angels for power and strength. Crighton traps two angels but one manages to fly away. At the same time, the two of them are captured by a secret organization that experiments on supernatural creatures. Through experiments, a bond is created between them and their souls are intertwined. How will Crighton survive in hell while his soul is intertwined with an angel's? Now they have to find a way to stay alive while figuring out what their lives have become.
What I liked most about the book was its flow. The author explained how heaven, hell, demons and angels came to be very well. This created a background for the story and it helped to understand the rest of it. The occurrences in the book were also very visual. The author described hell and heaven in a way that created a mental image of the places and the creatures living there. I also liked the way the author described how soulmates come to be. Every character's personality is brought out adequately. Crighton is portrayed as harsh and uncaring as demons should be. Angels are seen to be gentle and kind.
What I disliked most about the book was how two major tales were combined. I felt that the book could be divided into two unrelated stories. The first one being about the father who killed the son, the second being about the angel Ariel. The transition between these two stories was not perfected. It felt like I was reading different books in the same sequel. Some chapters were also rushed through. The author sometimes reduced events that could otherwise have been epic into simple scenes.
I rate the book four out of four stars. I have not given it a lower rating because the story was very interesting to read. In addition to that, I found very few typing errors and mistakes. The author did a good job in proofreading the novel.
This book is suitable for anyone who likes the concept of heaven, hell, demons and angels. It can also be read by those who enjoy fantasy, adventure and romance.
