“How did I not guess she/he was the real killer? It was obvious all along.”-This is what I felt after reading, The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare. This book is a detective murder mystery and the fourth book in The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries series.

A judge is horrendously murdered in his own home. Chief Inspector Sheehan and his team of detectives suspect two parties: criminals who issued death threats against the judge and a group of high-profile rich people who attended the judge’s party on the night of the tragic murder. While the detectives struggled to unearth the identity of the killer, a blog popped up inside the underbelly of the dark web. The blog’s author, Nemein, started posting articles about random murders and the murderer’s philosophical reasoning behind committing those crimes. What is the strange connection between these two incidents? Is the judge’s murder a lone incident, or did the killer strike again? Who is this killer whose actions led to the discovery of a mysterious club? Come on, dear reader, unearth these mysteries yourself by reading this book.

I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find any major errors that stopped me from giving this book a full score. This book is well-edited. The author ingeniously brings less-used words (e.g., rubicund face) to the limelight. And this, in turn, increased my vocabulary significantly. Phrases like “being economical with the truth” showed the author’s fondness for wordplay. Nemein’s posts were filled with well-researched arguments. The author has provided a brief guide to the characters and common police terms at the beginning itself. The author successfully sustained mystery until the end, all the while divulging minute clues, and I didn’t pick up these obvious clues to my dismay! Props to the author for making me doubt all the characters, except for the real one. The story in itself is comprehensive. The author deconstructs every step of the murder investigation, forensics, and even murderer’s psychology elaborately.

Few things to keep in mind before picking this book: This book contains heinous of heinous crimes, adult language, grotesque and graphic killing, and in-depth details about the dark web. The descriptions and nature of the crimes might churn a sensitive reader’s stomach. This book is not at all suitable for young readers for the above-mentioned reasons.

I do not have any negative issues with this book, and I have found a new author to binge read. This book can be read as a stand-alone, even though this is part of a series. I will read other books in this series. This book reminded me of Ben Elton’s Past Mortem, which I had read long back. I will recommend this book to all the detective/murder mystery fans out there.
