Review by abudaniel28 -- The Dark Web Murders
All fans of mysteries pretty much know two things. Firstly, the worst nightmare of every homicide detective is the perfect murder. Secondly, one has to be a psychopath or a sociopath to go on a killing spree and then try to justify it. The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare is a mystery novel. Set in Northern Ireland, it tells the story of detectives scrambling around, looking for a way to catch a killer. However, they are always several steps behind him. What is more, the killer enthusiastically describes the murders down to the tiniest detail to his growing online fanbase.
August 2018 must have been the worst month for the Chief Inspector of the Police Service of Northern Ireland. For two weeks, Jim Sheehan and his team spent every single day either at the scenes of some of the most gruesome murders or at the police station, where the team was trying to figure it all out. Unfortunately for these detectives, there was nothing usual about the nature of these killings. Nothing connected the victims except the killer and the "instrument of justice" with which he carried out his "holy vengeance".
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare is one of the best mystery novels I have read in a long time. There are several positive aspects of this novel. First and foremost, I don’t think I have read a novel where the killer blogs about his murders. You see, this person is a highly intellectual and cunning narcissistic psychopath who uses a philosophical approach to justify his serial murders. I find this quite fascinating. Secondly, most of the pages of this novel comprise dialogues. Though these discussions are sometimes intense, Brian O'Hare displays his mastery by using humour and sarcasm to make for a more interesting read. Thirdly, I got the feeling that I was present in the Serious Crimes Room as a part of the team investigating these heinous murders. I like these aspects of the novel.
Honestly, I fail to find any negative aspect of the book. There was no part of the book that I did not like. Every page had a story to tell, and each chapter was well thought out. Furthermore, The Dark Web Murders is an exceptionally well-edited book and was thoroughly proofread, so there were no grammar errors and typos; kudos to the editor(s). Based on all the aforementioned, I am awarding The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare four out of four stars. Anything less would be unjustifiable.
I would recommend this novel to fans of mysteries, especially those who are interested in twisted endings. Moreover, if you are looking for a great book, I would recommend The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare, you will not regret it. That said, the descriptions of the crime scenes are graphic, so keep that in mind if you are considering this book. I would not recommend it to people who are uninterested in intense discussions, dialogues, and philosophical jargons.
