Review by Ktstigg05 -- Diamond and Pearls by Julien Ayotte
When I began reading Diamonds and Pearls by Julien Ayotte, it had the feel of a crime novel or a whodunit mystery. The story quickly transformed into a tale of intertwining lives and redemption stories. After a collection of home burglaries of cash and expensive jewelry, we follow insurance adjustor and former police detective, Drew Diamond, on his mission to recover the stolen jewelry and save the insurance company from big payouts. We soon meet widowed realtor, Sydney Malone, who struggled to stay afloat when the housing market slowed. We are also introduced to Richie Volpe, a bottom rung lackey for the mob wishing to provide for his mom and escape mob life while he still can. While it seems that these three would run in very different social circles, their lives soon overlap in various ways. Sydney helps Drew find a home for his new life as a recently widowed retiree. Richie begins a relationship with a woman from Sydney’s past. All three meet through a coincidental series of events leading them to be in a small, wooded New Hampshire town simultaneously. Through it all, there is the ongoing investigation to discover who stole and fenced the precious jewelry. Is everyone who they seem? Can people redeem themselves from their mistakes? Does justice need to be served the way we expect?
Ayotte’s book is a quick an enjoyable read. The plot has exciting twists and the character depth has you rooting for various characters to find happiness. You will also find yourself in a constant state of nervousness as it seems the joy may unravel at any moment. Another positive is that the book has a PG rating with no bad language and only hints of sexual content beyond kissing.
I did truly enjoy the book, so I do not have anything negative to critique personally. I know there will be those who feel Diamonds and Pearls is too simple or that some of the story lines are disjointed. In my opinion, the plot works well, the story is believable, and everything is tied together in the end.
Diamonds and Pearls receives 4 out of 4 stars from me. It is a simple read with an easy to follow and entertaining plot.
I would recommend this book to those who love mysteries, enjoy the idea that our lives are interconnected, or just looking for a fun read. This book is a great option for summer or vacation reading. For age appropriateness, I would recommend teenagers and above due to the hints of sexual content and burglary content.
