Review by Patag Ghosal -- The Dark Web Murders
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’ Hare starts off with a vicious death. A Judge is brutally murdered and the skilled team of detectives led by the incredibly perceptive Jim Sheehan takes on the high-profile case. But soon, more bodies with the same modus operandi turn up, and all the characters seem to be respectable members of civil society. The team slowly unravel a deep pit of unnatural secrets and connections filled with grotesque practices and hidden personas where everything is available for a price and everybody has a motive to kill the other.
The author manages to start the narrative with a gruesome murder that immediately sets the tone for the entire book. He has a crisp writing style with excellent editing that quickly gets the point across yet manages to maintain a constant sense of suspense and thrill. He manages to detail the fine points of a murder mystery thriller including the motives, the law and the evidence and the process of the investigation carried out by the team. The team consists of unique characters who each bring their special dynamic to the narrative and are complemented by excellent dialogues and fascinating observations and internal monologues.
The murderer writes detailed blogs on the Dark Web, his identity shrouded in mystery, but his words indicating an intelligent, well-read and extremely driven individual who analyzes the philosophy behind each murder and how the people we believe to be the pillars of justice and good faith are the ones who hold the darkest secrets. He is known only by his pseudo-name and chooses to present a detached version of the murders to justify his actions.
The book is clearly well-researched with incredibly subtle clues strewn throughout the narrative that all unfolds and comes together in the satisfying climax, which in hindsight shows a well-developed plotline and great structure for a murder mystery. The author does well to balance personal storylines between the members of the team and the overarching narrative. There is nothing that I didn’t like about this book and it is definitely an engrossing read from start to finish.
The author has managed to create excellent characters along with authentic police investigations and interrogations that add a sense of realism to the storyline. This book is an excellent addition to the crime mystery genre and deserves a solid rating of 4 out of 4 stars and is a definite must-read for fans of the crime thriller genre and those who love an intelligent mystery novel. However, it does contain a fair bit of gore and profanity along with extremely adult themes and references and is definitely only suitable for adults.
