Waves Brake (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland is a crime fiction novel. The story has a lot going on, reuniting childhood friends and enemies in a seaside town, where pretty much everyone and everything is somehow connected.

Philip and Wayne's friendship has lasted through the years since they were nine-year-olds, even after the death of their friend Stevie. In Wayne's childhood, things weren't well at his home, and no one cared for him too much. In the end, Philip and Stevie befriended him because many kids weren't too eager to do that, excluding Tina, who was often part of this group of friends, too. Now, as adults, living in the same town they grew up in, the past seems to be coming flooding back in the form of Wayne's older brother, Tyrone, who's back on the scene. All of a sudden, people are burglarized or mutilated and, if they don't already find themselves in the hospital, there's a reason to fear for their own or someone else's safety or reputation.

The novel was well written, and the story progressed clearly and smoothly. There was some profanity but, in my opinion, not to the extent it would bother too much. Predominantly, the scenes were in the present, but at times, Philip would look back to his childhood with Wayne, Stevie, and Tina, and some people who left no fond memories to think about. The story was written in the first person, from Philip's point of view.

The novel was overall good and interesting. There was always something happening, and because it was so captivating, it was hard to take a break from reading. The characters were realistic, and I liked that there were many kinds of personalities and backgrounds included. I noticed only a few errors in the text, which didn't cause a lot of distraction, and I still think it was professionally edited. I cannot come up with anything that I didn't like in this novel. I haven't read much crime fiction before, but Waves Brake (on Unknown Shores) fulfilled my expectations for a book in this genre.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Waves Brake (on Unknown Shores) was unputdownable, and the story was great straight from the beginning until the end. I would recommend this book to people who like fast-paced and suspenseful crime stories or generally to anyone who's looking for something good to read.
