Wendy Webb’s The Vanishing is a gothic horror tale about a strong woman weakened by circumstance and then challenged by the situation she finds herself in. It is the story of Julia Bishop who lost her husband and is left penniless by his nefarious activities. When a mysterious stranger offers her the chance to be caretaker to Amaris Sinclair, the eccentric novelist who disappeared from public life, she finds a chance to rebuild her shattered life. So Julia moves to Havenwood.

Amaris Sinclair lives with a loving family and a bunch of animals within the walls of Havenwood. It is a big, old house with centuries of life - witnessing countless births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and every shade of human life happening within its walls. There are lots of ghosts and spirits roaming the halls of Havenwood. Gideon, the violent and malevolent force that lives in the East Salon of the house is one of them.

Soon Julia realizes things are not what they seem to be. She is faced with pretty powerful and strange situations, and instead of running away from it she wanted to get to the bottom of them. The story has a few key secrets that are revealed as the story progresses, like why Amaris Sinclair dropped out of public life. If you want to be surprised by the twists and turns of a story and enjoy the fun to just see where the developing story takes you, you will love The Vanishing.
