When it appears that the lives of all the people you ever care for are on the line. What will you do? Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland is a fiction book that centers around Phil Tyler and his childhood friends (Wayne and Tina). The storyline explores the themes of revenge, loyalty, friendship, romance, and familial love.

Phil Tyler, the story narrator, is a journalist who has no illusions about his bravado. A seemingly random burglary leads to a possible homicide, and suddenly, journalists, lawyers, thugs, and politicians all become embroiled in a race to find (or bury) the truth. With different parties pursuing their agenda, Phil finds time running against him as he faces a choice to protect his life and that of his friends or resign to fate. As events unravel, it became clear that the past’s cruel events and a buried business secret can shape the present fatally. Will Phil shed his cowardice and step up to defend those he loves, or will he retreat into the shadows and hope things fall into place?

The story is narrated from Will Phil’s perspective, which made the storyline relatable. Also, the author employed a great deal of humor. Even when they found themselves in dire situations, the characters never lost their wit and sense of sarcasm. I found my anxiety being relieved on many occasions by the bad jokes and false humility. My favorite is from Phil’s narration of his encounter with some politicians where he said, “there are no smiles anymore. It’s like I’ve just farted over dessert.”

The author wrote the book across two timelines; the scenes rotated between the characters’ childhood experiences and their present adult life. I found that refreshing as the author used it to build the suspense tool in a unique approach.

Wayne Keech is my favorite character. He is a stubborn guy who will never give up on a mission. Also, he maintained his principled stand all through the story. Besides, he is insanely loyal to his friends and takes his promises to people seriously. Despite his questionable and disadvantaged childhood, his transformation against odds was evident to everyone when he grew up.

I enjoyed the book so much; there is nothing I dislike about it. This is a well-edited book because I found only a few errors that did not affect my reading experience. Therefore, I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars because of its compelling plot, relatable characters, flawless editing, and satisfying conclusion.

I would recommend this book heartily to lovers of crime and thriller novels. Also, fans of suspenseful stories will enjoy this book because it is impossible to guess what will happen on the next page.
