Official Review: Find Me by KL Watkins
Downtown Detroit has been besieged by a pandemic—a virus—that threatens to spill out and overtake the entire population. Rhys, Aaron, Tech, and Dynah are members of a special force unit in the army assigned the job of containing the area and extracting any survivors. The team, however, has been given little to no information and is walking blindly into a red zone. Putting all their expertise and training to use, this four-person team will have to find the collective strength within themselves to handle this arduous task successfully. What exactly is this disease? Do they have what it takes to make it out alive?
Honestly, Find Me by KL Watkins was a confusing book to read. From the beginning of the book to its conclusion, it was hard for me to make sense of precisely what was happening. Watkins wrote this story in the first-person perspective but kept switching between characters such that I could hardly tell which character was narrating at any given time. I also felt there was a lack of core direction in the story. I could understand that a four-person team was sent on a mission—that much was clear—but there wasn't much else for me to work with. The different story tendrils/subplots didn't come together as I'd hoped. I was left trying to make sense of the whole story due to the lack of coordination as the story unfolded.
Though the book was difficult to understand, I enjoyed the military precision and undertone of the story. The four-person team was a well-oiled machine with a track record of success. This much was evident from the various flashbacks of the team leader, Rhys. It was fun to read about their effectiveness and the efficiency with which they operated under Rhys. I loved how their training kicked in whenever they needed to remain calm under pressure and dispatch their assignments. This was really the only thing I liked about this book.
While I loved how they went about their mission, I couldn't really grasp the ultimate objective. Initially, it was about containing the virus and extracting any survivors. However, this seemed to change without sufficient warning at some point in the book. This confusion and ambiguity dented my enjoyment of the book.
The number of grammar and typographical errors I found was really shocking. It was the biggest problem I had with this book. The errors were littered all over the book and required me to go over certain sections repeatedly to understand the point being made. This book didn't go through any form of professional editing, which is sad.
Owing to the plot's directional confusion, the lack of a clear mission objective, and the number of grammar errors, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I can't give it one star because I did enjoy the author's description of the military missions; I'm a sucker for that type of stuff. Also, there are other people like me who may be willing to give it a try based on its military focus alone. I recommend this book to people who love dystopian/post-apocalyptic stories with a strong military presence.
