Review by Priscilla Tee -- Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)
We journey into the childhood lives of three boys. Their lives aren’t a bed of roses, but not dark and gloomy either, just a balance between the two. These boys have extremely different personalities and character, but they form an unbreakable bond. Many aren’t really comfortable with this formation, but the boys won’t have it. They experience all sorts of misfortunes, from bad parenting to bullying, but what hits them the most is sudden tragedy.
Only Phil and Wayne carry on with the journey of life as Steve is no more. Adulthood proves to be even more difficult as they come bearing the shadows from the past and facing the uncertainties of the future. They reconnect with their primary school friend and things spiral quickly out of control. New secrets are being excavated, there’s betrayal and death is lurking once again.
Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland is a crime-fiction drama told from a first-person perspective. It is a story about life experiences, how we live with them and how we carry them into the future. This story is set on uncovering deep-rooted issues that we may have experienced, adapted or even inherited. The story goes back and forth between the present and the past. It is about child development, friendship, family as well as future expectations. The author dives into social expectations, parenting and success. We see how the boys transition from boys to men and how hard this process can be. Barry Litherland did an exceptional job in uncovering societal issues and also talking about the effects of neglecting children. The book is a perfect example of the consequences that evolve from bad parenting.
The thing I like the most about this book has to be the interchange between the past and the present, the author did a remarkable job switching between the scenes. I enjoyed this because it made the book an interesting read. I also enjoyed the sarcasm and humor contained here as it made the whole reading experience enjoyable. There’s absolutely nothing I didn’t like about this book as it was captivating and capturing.
I rate this book a 4 out 4 stars because it was well-written, professionally edited, intriguing and appealing. There’s a lot of profane used here as well violence so I strongly advise that it shouldn’t be read by sensitive readers. I recommend this book to those who find great pleasure in crime fiction.
