[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Cyclist Down" by Bill Freeman.]
“Justice is impossible, completely impossible, he concluded.”
Cyclist Down by Bill Freeman is the first book in the Mariner’s Story crime series. On a warm Friday evening in the city of St. James Town, Detective Mariner, a kind-hearted detective, feels trouble coming. Moments later, a car accident occurs between an SUV and a bicyclist causing a young woman to be killed. Although the perpetrator and motives are clear the question is, can they prove him guilty?
Cyclist Down by Bill Freeman is an engaging and unique read that explored the aftermath of a death while discussing relevant societal situations. The book details the inner working of the justice system and the social and systematic guides that interfere in discovering truth and delivering justice. In the time that precedes the dangerous driving trial, Detective Mariner and those working with him explore the people involved and the backgrounds and histories that have led each person to where they are.
I loved that this book follows a compelling central story while also addressing important themes. It discusses the safety of bicyclists on the road and the controversies between cars and bicycles. It comments on immigration in large cities and the combination of people that live and work together while also exploring topics such as family dynamics, addiction, prejudice, and justice. Cyclist Down is an interesting read that serves a larger purpose of societal exploration.
I would give Cyclist Down by Bill Freeman a three out of four star rating. I thought this book was a wonderful read that keeps the attention of readers and compels every page turn. The story is unique and also meaningful, and I enjoyed every moment of it. There was very little I disliked about the book but there were slight aspects that kept me from giving this book a four star review. There were several grammatical issues there were not bad but were present. Additionally, some of the dialogue felt unrealistic which could take away from the moment. Lastly, parts of the conclusion felt oddly developed and like they did not entirely fit the narrative that came before. But overall, this is a fantastic read.
I would recommend Cyclist Down to anyone who enjoys the crime genre. The characters are amazingly developed and fascinating to learn about, the central story keeps the reader's attention, and the story investigates societal issues that go beyond crime and negligence to create an overall, superb novel.
