Review by Bits Of Inkling -- Waves Break (on Unknown Sho...
Phil, Wayne, and Stevie — the invincible trio. When they were nine, they like playing the role of superheroes or private detectives plotting imaginary danger. Wayne would always imagine saving Tina. Phil and Stevie would excitedly accept the stupid idea. But, when the real conflict occurs, the little strength they have won’t be enough to fight their persistent antagonist — Tyrone. He made life hard for Wayne. The little boy has always been a victim of his brother's violent behavior and crimes. Worse, his friends also weren’t able to escape Tyrone’s madness.
Twenty years later, they are still haunted by Stevie's death. While the criminal who killed him has been freed from prison. Phil, Wayne, and Tina's life will again be at serious risk.
Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) was written by Barry Litherland. It’s a remarkable tale about friendship, childhood adventures, and ordeals, as well as the complexity of adult life. The author’s account of the past has managed to evoke memories of my own innocent and vulnerable years. There are so many emotions that could be felt like pain, laughter, and suspense. But, the most important is the very satisfying and emotional conclusion.
The situation that Phil and Wayne are facing is like a scuffle between David and Goliath. They are without a doubt weaker as compared to Tyrone and the bunch of criminals he’s working with. But, the traumatic loss will push them to rewrite the past. Although Stevie’s death has been disclosed early, how it happened is one way to keep the readers guessing. Furthermore, there’s a similar kind of unpredictability on how the current crime is connected to the past.
The main protagonists are well-characterized and absolutely likable. Phil is a funny man. His sense of humor and frequent jokes, in a way, lightens the seriousness of the story. I can’t count how many times he made me laugh with his wits, cursing and flirting when he’s supposed to find the documents that would save their lives. Wayne, on the other hand, is carefree about other’s opinions. He fought hard to turn away from his former life and made sure not to become like his brother. I like how his character developed from someone unlikeable to a trusted ally, particularly to Tina’s father. I also find Tina Oldfield agreeable when it comes to her judgment. Parents would not let their kids associate with Wayne because he came from a dysfunctional family. But, as a little girl, she believed in Wayne. She’s been compassionate and protective to him ever since. Their love for each other is just so pure.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. After reading this, I honestly look forward to reading more of Litherland’s novels. It will get you hooked till the end. Also, it’s an easy-to-read book, professionally edited and there’s nothing I dislike about it. The story is written in the first-person point of view. Narrated at a moderate pace.
I recommend this book to readers over the age of seventeen who are interested in the combined crime-drama, suspense, thriller, and friendship-themed novel. There’s a moment of romance but it doesn't take the center stage. It will surely contribute to the readers’ interest. Profane language, violence, and some adult elements are present.
