“The Mayakovski Assignment” by Colin Webster is a thriller packed with realistic action, marvelous characters, and strong writing. The story follows Patrick Kane as he ventures from London to communist Russia to free a Russian physicist, Andrei Mayakovski, who was working on a top-secret military project. Mayakovski wishes to leave communist Russia to join his wife whom left Russia a few years previously. Not only does Mayakovski wish to leave Russia, but the British wish to obtain the intelligence of Russian military secrets that he holds, which is where Kane comes in. Kane enlists the help of Vasyuchenko and his lovely daughter, Irina, as they are extremely close to Mayakovski and are natives. The book follows the group as they rescue Mayakovski from his guards and race across the country, trying to stay one step ahead of the KGB which always seem to be right on their tail.

This book is wrought with suspense and nonstop action. The excitement starts right at the beginning as Mayakovski tries (and fails) to escape Russia via the Finnish border. As soon as Kane and the rest are introduced, the action ups in intensity, not slowing down until the very end of the story. While there is a lot of action in this story, the action is realistic and believable. It’s easy to imagine the characters actually on the run from the KGB and while some of their actions didn’t seem logical (I.E. stopping to rest while on the way to the border), the majority of their actions were believable; it was easy to imagine actual people making the same decisions.

The characters themselves were incredibly believable. All of the characters acted in a realistic manner and their actions/dialogue towards each other was remarkably believable also. Along with being believable, the characters were immensely likable. My favorite character was Irini, her enthusiasm to help and love for uncle was palpable throughout the pages of the book.

The final thing that I enjoyed in this book was the writing style. The author writes in a style that is easy to read and enjoy. He describes communist Russia, the characters, and the events in a way that is easy to picture, without being overbearing. I don’t like it when authors over-describe in their books and this author did a fantastic job of portraying a story without clouding the readers’ head with ceaseless descriptions.

It’s also obvious that the author did a lot of research going into this book. He seems knowledgeable on the workings of the military at the time and what life was like in communist Russia. He does a fantastic job of placing the reader in a well-researched world that is believable and realistic.

I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars; if you enjoy thrillers, especially spy novels, you will devour this book and enjoy every bite. The masterful writing combined with the compelling plot and likable characters made this book a truly enjoyable read. I will definitely be checking into other books written by Colin Webster.
